Food for Fines

I checked out Molly O'Neill's new book from John Jermain Library quite awhile ago and I just finished browsing its 600 recipes. Of course, it's overdue. But I was alerted yesterday by Save Sag Harbor (subscribe to their very interesting e-mail alerts by clicking here) that March is Food for Fines month at the library, and fines will be forgiven for anyone who brings in a canned goods donation for the Sag Harbor Food Pantry. So I'm going to drop off my book and this can of beans, before heading to Citarella's in search of a persimmon (no hope of finding a Black Sapote in Bridgehampton) for my pound cake.

Seed Drive Needs Your Help

The Sag Harbor Elementary School's greenhouse is up and running, and there are plans to grow vegetables for the food pantry. They asked for seeds, so today I bought a few packets at the Variety Store (45 Main Street; 725-9706) to donate to the cause.

More Food Pantry Inspiration

Last week our fifth graders formed an assembly line and produced dozens of bags of trail mix, which they'll sell at Sag Harbor Elementary School tomorrow, proceeds benefiting the food pantry. I love how their recipe is right on the sign! Today, I'm taking my own fifth grader and a couple of her friends to see This is It in East Hampton, since they're out of school for Veterans' Day. Inspired by the children's project, I made my own trail mix, with some ingredients I had on hand. Let's see if I can persaude them to eat this instead of popcorn.

Trail Mix

Makes about 5 1/2 cups

1 cup pretzel Goldfish

1 cup salted, roasted peanuts

1 cup salted, roasted cashews

½ cup unsalted pumpkin seeds

1 cup milk chocolate chips or chunks

1 cup dried cherries

¼ cup finely chopped crystallized ginger

Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Food Drive Rap

Every once in a while I leave my camera at home, and kick myself when I miss an opportunity to photograph something that would be just perfect for Sag Harbor Days. One time, in June, I saw a sign in the window of the American Hotel advertising half-price lobster dinners. Rudy Giuliani was sitting right in front of it, obscuring some important information. But still, wouldn't you have liked to have seen that? A few nights later, I saw some ducks eating large matzoh crackers in the parking lot between Sen and the Suffolk County National Bank. I've seen those ducks a dozen times since, but never again eating matzoh. Another missed opportunity. I could have kicked myself today, because Morning Program at the Elementary School featured some of our most musical teachers performing an excellent rap song about the upcoming food drive. They were dressed in hoodies and sunglasses and rhyming "healthy snack" and "leader of the pack," and of course they had some much better material that I can't remember now because I'm old. I returned this afternoon, but everyone had changed back into their teaching clothes, and I wasn't even able to track down the complete lyrics. I did photograph the announcement of the food drive, which benefits the Sag Harbor Food Pantry, and these large medallions made of pasta and frozen waffles that were worn by the teachers who rapped about carbohydrates. I hope this is enough for you to conjure images of the performance, and to remember to donate generously to the food pantry in these weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.

Sag Harbor Food Pantry Benefit

Although I read the New York Times every morning at home, I get the most important local news off the wall at Java Nation (78 Main Street, 631-725-7500). I saw this flyer while having coffee today. I'd pay double to see inside SIX LOCAL KITCHENS IN ONE AFTERNOON! Who wants to come with me? For more information on the event, go to sagharborfoodpantry.org.
